Getting Started

You have been thinking about therapy for a while. Maybe months. But the idea of sitting across from a stranger and talking about your life feels awkward — and you are not even sure what actually happens in a session. Here is a clear, no-jargon guide to online therapy in India, so the first step feels a lot less scary.

Key takeaways

  • Online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most common concerns like anxiety, stress, depression and relationship issues.
  • Your first session is mostly a conversation — about what brought you in, your background, and what you want to change.
  • Sessions are confidential, and you can join from home, office or anywhere private with a stable connection.
  • It usually takes a few sessions to feel the benefit, so give the process a fair chance.

What online therapy actually is

Online therapy is a live session with a trained mental health professional over video, audio call or sometimes chat. It is the same work that happens in a clinic — listening, understanding patterns, building coping skills — just delivered on a screen.

For many people in India, this removes the biggest barriers: traffic, finding a good therapist nearby, taking half a day off work, and the worry of being seen walking into a clinic.

Does online therapy really work?

Research over the last decade has consistently found that video-based therapy works about as well as face-to-face therapy for concerns like anxiety, depression, stress and burnout. What matters most is not the medium but the relationship — feeling heard, understood and safe with your therapist.

Online sessions may not be the right fit for severe crises or conditions that need close medical monitoring. A good therapist will tell you honestly if you need a different level of care.

What happens in your first session

The first session is often called an intake or assessment. Your therapist will ask what brought you to therapy now, how long you have been feeling this way, and how it is affecting your sleep, work, relationships and daily life. They may also ask about your family, health and past experiences.

You do not need to prepare a perfect story. It is completely fine to say, “I don’t really know where to start.” That is a starting point too. Towards the end, you will usually talk about goals and how often you might meet.

How to prepare for an online session

Find a private, quiet spot where you won’t be overheard — a closed room, a parked car, even a terrace. Use earphones. Keep water and tissues nearby. Check your internet a few minutes before. And give yourself ten minutes after the session to breathe before jumping into a work call.

It also helps to jot down two or three things you want to talk about. Not a script — just a nudge for when your mind goes blank.

Privacy and confidentiality

What you share in therapy stays between you and your therapist. The only exceptions are rare situations where someone’s safety is at serious risk. If privacy at home is a concern, tell your therapist — you can use chat, choose timings when the house is empty, or agree on a code if someone walks in.

Therapy is not about being judged. It is about being understood.

Frequently asked questions

How many therapy sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are working on. Some people find relief in 6–8 sessions for a specific issue like work stress; deeper patterns may take a few months. You and your therapist can review progress regularly.

Is online therapy confidential?

Yes. Professional therapists follow ethical guidelines on confidentiality. Choose a private space on your side, and ask your therapist any questions you have about how your information is handled.

Can I switch therapists if it doesn’t feel right?

Absolutely. The fit between you and your therapist matters a lot. Saying it isn’t working is normal and will not offend a good professional.
