Getting Started

Searching “therapist near me” throws up hundreds of names, titles and price tags. Psychologist, counsellor, psychiatrist, life coach — what’s the difference, and how do you know who is right for you? This guide helps you choose the right therapist in India with confidence.

Key takeaways

  • A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medicine; psychologists and counsellors provide talk therapy.
  • Check qualifications: a relevant master’s degree in psychology, and for clinical psychologists, RCI registration.
  • Fit matters as much as credentials — you should feel safe, respected and not judged.
  • It is okay to ask questions before booking and to switch if it isn’t working.

Know the different professionals

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MBBS plus MD in Psychiatry). They diagnose and can prescribe medication, and are the right first stop for severe symptoms.

Clinical psychologists hold an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent) and are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). They assess and treat a wide range of mental health conditions.

Counselling psychologists and counsellors usually hold a master’s in psychology or counselling, and work with stress, relationships, anxiety, life transitions, grief and more. Many people start here.

Questions worth asking before you book

What are your qualifications and training? What kind of concerns do you usually work with? What approach do you use — for example CBT, person-centred or mindfulness-based therapy? How long are sessions, and what is the fee and cancellation policy?

A good therapist will answer these openly. Vagueness or promises of a quick “cure” are red flags.

Signs you have found a good fit

You feel listened to rather than lectured. Your culture, family context and values are respected — not dismissed. Sessions feel structured but not rigid. And over a few weeks you notice something shifting, even if it is small.

Feeling uncomfortable at times is normal — therapy touches tender places. Feeling judged, rushed or unsafe is not.

Cultural understanding matters

For many Indians, mental health is tangled with family expectations, marriage pressure, joint-family dynamics, caste, religion and career pressure. A therapist who understands this context can help you find solutions that actually work in your life — not advice that only fits a textbook.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a psychiatrist or a psychologist?

If your symptoms are severe — you can’t function, you have thoughts of harming yourself, or you have hallucinations — see a psychiatrist. For most stress, anxiety, relationship and life concerns, a psychologist or counsellor is a great place to start, and they can refer you if needed.

Is RCI registration important?

For clinical psychologists in India, yes — RCI registration is a legal requirement. For counselling, ask about the therapist’s degree and supervised training.

How long before I know if a therapist is right?

Usually within two or three sessions you will have a sense of whether you feel comfortable. Give it a fair try, then trust your gut.
